Scoliosis?!!
WHAT?! My first thought when I first found out I had scoliosis. I was first diagnosed in September last year. I was out running with my mum (haha why?) when she noticed that my shoulder blade was sticking out a bit.
We decided we’d go to the physio just to get it checked out and lucky we did. She looked at my back then got me to bend over and suspected that it was scoliosis so told me to go see my gp about it.
We went to the gp and boy was that an experience. The doctor was just training but when she started googling what scoliosis was in front of me I was a little concerned. She finally worked out what it was and agreed that yes I did have scoliosis. We then moved on to ask to be referred to get xrays. She asked another doctor about what she should do for she didn’t know which part of my spine to scan. They ended up agreeing that they weren’t going to give me the referral for he thought I was too young to be exposed to radiation. This was really annoying as I needed the xrays to get in to see any scoliosis specialists. We decided to go get the xrays anyway because they were so important.
Our next step was to go see the lovely Victoria at scoliosis physiotherapy. We had our first consult to confirm that I definitely had scoliosis. She looked at my xrays and then we got started on Schroth. I highly recommend Scroth to anyone with scoliosis. It is pretty much physio specific to your exact curve type. This physio was fantastic but in the end I ended up finding out that I would need spinal fusion surgery.
My final step was to see a surgeon. The surgeon we saw works at the Royal Children’s Hospital but I first went to see him privately. When I met him I knew I wanted him to be my surgeon. He understood my life and everything I wanted the surgery to work around. So that was it I was having surgery, at that point with no clue when, but at least I now knew who my surgeon would be and that made me feel a bit more relaxed.
