Post-surgery scoliosis

Another checkup

On Tuesday this week I had another check up appointment at the Royal Children’s Hospital. I’m now around 5 months post-op so going in I was expecting that I’d probably be told of a lot more things that I could now do.

When we first arrived I went to get my x-rays as usual and it was actually a lot quicker than normal which made is nice and easy. Then once I’d got them we went into the consult area and waited. As always there was a long wait but it wasn’t as long as it has been previously (8 hours when surgery was cancelled.) Eventually my number came up and we went in to see one of my surgeons.

My surgeon was really happy with how my back was looking and after I saw my last x-ray compared to the one I got that day I was amazed at the fact that they were pretty much exactly the same. Obviously that shows that the surgery was successful and the fusion is working perfectly. Then my surgeon told me what I could get back to and he said that that was most things! So I can go back to running, softball, dancing; basically anything besides contact sport which will be around 12 months until I can get back to that and I can’t do anything which will have a lot of pressure on my back such as skiing and trampolining (wasn’t planning on it anyway.) I’m so happy with this news and I never thought I’d say it but I’m actually slightly looking forward to getting back to sport next term. This also means I’ll be fine to do everything when I go to China later this year.

We did ask him about my right shoulder blade as it does stick out slightly. He said that it is still like that because of the rotation of my spine which they can’t fully correct so no physio or anything like that would be able to fix that. He said the only way it could be fixed was another operation to break my ribs which obviously we’re not going to do. I was fine with this as it is hardly noticeable and I’m not self conscious about it at all. I’ve noticed that when I make an effort to stand up straight you can’t see it at all so as long as I continue to do that no one will ever notice.

After we came home from the hospital we went out for dinner to celebrate my good news. My steak was delicious:)

As I’m talking about my check up at the Royal Children’s Hospital I just wanted to give a quick reminder that I am doing a fundraiser for their 2019 Good Friday Appeal and I still have quite a few tins left so if you want to get involved let me know. You can email me at justanothercurveball@gmail.com. Also thank you so much to everyone who has taken a tin. It’s amazing, I’m already getting some back!
