Post-surgery scoliosis

Appointments and Fundraising

6 week check up

Earlier this week on Tuesday I had my six week post op check up. I went in to the Royal Children’s Hospital and first got my x-rays

After getting x-rays I went to meet with a surgeon to receive some information. He told me my back was all fine and that I was going great. Amazing news 🙂

Physio

After the appointment in hospital I decided it was a good time to go back and see my physio from before surgery. Before I had the surgery I was seeing Victoria at Scoliosis Physiotherapy in Kew. They were all really nice there so I was looking forward to going back and getting some more exercises. I would definitely recommend you to go there.

When I went in, Victoria first looked at my x-rays and we checked a few things. First, height and weight where I was quite disappointed that I had only grown 0.4cm but she then got me to stand straight and elongate like I do in my exercises and just by doing that I grew another centimetre, that’s why posture and the way you hold yourself is so important. We then checked my lung function. Before surgery my lung function was 80% and it’s now 57% so we decided to also work on that a bit in the exercises.

After we checked everything I got down on the ground to start with some physio. Victoria explained to me that although my spine is straight my body and muscles are used to holding themselves in the position they were before surgery so I need to train them to be straight again. She has given me some things to do which are quite like Pilates. I also got an exercise which is quite similar to one I had before surgery. It’s on my hands and knees and wow doing that made me realise how weak I am. Before surgery I could hold myself like that fine but this team it wasn’t hard I could just feel myself working a lot harder. I also felt that with exercise I did my left side was so much harder to do than my right which wasn’t the same before surgery. It’s interesting to notice the difference. Now I just need to keep doing these exercises until I go back to see them in the holidays

Fundraiser

Finally I would just like to mention a fundraiser I’ll be doing. The Royal Children’s Hospital have done so much for me with my surgery so I would like to give something back to them. That’s why I will be getting involved in fundraising for the 2019 Good Friday Appeal and I’ll be starting this fundraiser now! All the information is below!

If you would like to get involved please send me an email at justanothercurveball@gmail.com or you can come speak to myself or anyone else you know connected to my cause.

    Hi Bethan!!!

Great to hear you are doing well, I’m very proud of all the effort you’ve put into this blog.

In fact I’m reading through all your pre-surgery articles at the moment because I’m going into hospital for leg surgery tomorrow. Its really putting my mind at ease.

I’m looking forward to being waited on for the coming few weeks!
